The exceptional quality of our Bali Rattan Lamps is not an accident. It is the result of a meticulous, systematic methodology for selecting, auditing, and collaborating with our network of artisan workshops. For our wholesale and OEM clients who order by the container load, consistency, durability, and adherence to specification are paramount. Our methodology ensures that every single piece, from the first to the thousandth, meets the highest standards of excellence.
This process is overseen by our Head of Production & Artisan Relations, Ibu Wayan Sari, who brings a lifetime of experience to our quality assurance framework.
Phase 1: Artisan Partner Vetting & Onboarding
Before any workshop is invited to join our production network, it must pass a comprehensive vetting process based on a 100-point scoring rubric. A workshop must achieve a minimum score of 85 to be considered.
Our Evaluation Criteria & Scoring Rubric:
- Craftsmanship & Technical Skill (40 points):
- Weaving consistency and tightness (10)
- Symmetry and structural integrity of frames (10)
- Finishing quality (no burrs, even color) (10)
- Proficiency with diverse materials (rattan, bamboo, lontar) (10)
- Ethical & Sustainable Practices (30 points):
- Evidence of fair wages and safe working conditions (15)
- Sourcing of materials from reputable, non-protected areas (10)
- Waste management and use of low-impact finishes (5)
- Production Capacity & Reliability (20 points):
- Demonstrated ability to scale production for FCL orders (10)
- Track record of meeting production deadlines (5)
- Organization of workshop and raw material inventory (5)
- Collaboration & Professionalism (10 points):
- Willingness to work on new/OEM designs and prototypes (5)
- Clear communication and responsiveness (5)
Phase 2: Rigorous Quality Control During Production
Once a partner is onboarded, every production run is subject to our three-stage quality control (QC) process.
Stage 1: Raw Material Inspection
Before production begins, all raw materials are inspected. Rattan poles are checked for consistent diameter, maturity, and absence of pests or cracks. Bamboo is inspected for signs of splitting. Water hyacinth fibers are checked for moisture content and strength. Any substandard material is rejected at this stage.
Stage 2: In-Production Milestone Audits
Our QC team, under Ibu Wayan’s supervision, conducts on-site inspections at key production milestones. For a pendant lamp, this means checking the frame construction before weaving begins, and then checking the weaving quality midway through the process. This allows us to catch any potential issues early, saving time and resources.
Stage 3: Final Pre-Shipment Inspection
Every single finished item is inspected at our central consolidation warehouse before being packaged for export. This final check covers:
- Dimensional Accuracy: Measured against the approved technical specifications.
- Aesthetic Consistency: Compared against the approved master sample for color, weave pattern, and overall appearance.
- Structural Integrity: Checked for any loose weaves, frame weakness, or damage.
- Component Check: For lamps requiring electrical components, we verify that the correct, client-specified hardware (e.g., UL-listed for USA, CE-certified for EU) has been prepared for inclusion.
Phase 3: Continuous Improvement & Partner Audits
Our partnership with artisans is a long-term commitment built on trust and continuous improvement. We don’t just inspect; we collaborate.
- Quarterly Site Visits: Ibu Wayan and her team visit each of our core partner workshops at least once per quarter to review processes, discuss challenges, and provide training on new techniques or designs.
- Annual Performance Review: We conduct a formal annual review with each partner, assessing their performance against our quality and delivery metrics. High-performing partners are rewarded with larger and more consistent order volumes.
- Shared Best Practices: We facilitate a network where artisans can share knowledge about new finishing techniques or more efficient weaving methods, elevating the skill level of the entire community.
This comprehensive methodology is our promise to you. It is how we guarantee that an order placed with Bali Rattan Lamps is an investment in quality, reliability, and authentic, ethically-produced craftsmanship. Learn more about our commitment to ethical sourcing on our Sustainability page.
